Y2 Project Outline

Main areas for Practice Development

I feel clear on how my second year work is going to go and I see four channels of work, plus supportive/background ideas and research. They are:

  1. Boneyards - painting the landscape as an extension of the work I have always made. I see this avenue of work being my stronghold and the work I want to invest in the most regardless of how well it will be received as part of the MA. This will include large scale, earth based paintings, which will be less involved in the exploratory materials projects below but will build on the knowledge and experience I have built up over my life. The ‘above’ ground work, rather than the ‘below’ ground work of paper and 3D.

  2. Paper Castings - these will be made from paper derived from my compost heap and cast in forms that speak to funghi and the supportive networks within the earth. This may include a hanging lace installation or networks of craters either sewn or hung together in some way.

  3. Paper Clay Sculpture - a continuation of the Angel Wings and other compost derived sculpture. I have signed up to a ceramics course to learn how to make paper clay funghal forms.

  4. Compost and fungi drawings - drawings derived from the compost heap to include compost paper, ideas and imagery around funghi and compost humus ink. Formations of funghi and networks below the earth. I envisage a series of compost drawings that explore the below ground aspects of my research and will inform the casts and sculpture. I hope this will also include a long ‘trace narrative’ as I come full circle back on my Y1 project ideas.

General supportive work will include

  • Ongoing drawing practice of any kind that supports my artistic expression using any materials made or commercial

  • Finishing my book making project with the bleach drawings

  • General paper making experiments with whatever materials or ideas that present themselves on my journey

I anticipate a final show of between 1 and 4 of these channels and will remain open of course to new channels of thought. However these will be my dedicated focus for the coming months to ensure a degree show that I can feel some pride in.

Work Plan

I have updated my work schedule for the MA overall and I am creating a more specific week to week plan for managing both the research and practice work.

Overall MA Plan may be found here

Week by week schedule may be found here

I anticipate pulling together my blog to curate it before the deadline at the end of Unit 2 and I will start to review my Study Statement with the significant changes my work is undergoing.
