The industrial civilization of our time is fueled through the burning of ancient forests and peat lands, compressed into fossil fuels. From such fires emerge the anthropogenic carbon dioxide that threatens not only this civilization but also planetary ecologies more generally. Since the mid-20th century, nuclear fuels have joined fossil fuels in producing the Anthropocene.
