The Art of Necessity
One of the fields of exploration that is making more sense is where old and ancient wisdom might show the way but without the sticky business of cultural appropriation. Boro has been of huge interest to me all my life and my Borrowed Landscapes series took Boro as a central thread into my explorations of indigo and the hangings and textiles that adorned my childhood home. But then always this worry about appropriation and it is occurring to me that the ruination is only part of it, it is the mending that I am drawn to. I am exploring this wisdom, borrowed and respected rather than thieved or appropriated. Gratefully peering over the fence of another people and another time, in the hope that I may glean some knowledge that may alchemically be transformed in my work into a gold nugget of wisdom.
