Christmas Break

Mostly the Christmas break has been just that, but I have kept a pile of old paintings and drawings on paper in the kitchen and have been pulling them apart and exploring ruination of these old landscapes. I have also had some time spent in the studio revisiting some older canvases and they seem to be emerging in a similar vein.

Indigo pigment, paint and bleach on paper and canvas. Each around 30x40cm.

A brief reminder on the Reflective Practice Jonathan has encouraged from the beginning of the MA.

  • I am a bit disjointed in my practice currently so as part of my reflective practice I am reviewing my handwritten notes from Thursday sessions to help me get back on track.

  • “Reflection is not what you have done, it is about who you are when you are doing it”

  • Reflection attempts to encapsulate change: when did that change take place, what was the pivotal moment, when did it start to occur, when did it speed up or slow down?

  • Double Reflection - describe what you’ve done and a day or two later describe how it felt

  • “it is one thing to travel but it is a wholly different thing to know where you have been and where you are going”

  • The reflective cycle is not always a neat cycle.

  • ‘The Reflective Practice’ by Donald Schön

  • Questions to ask myself 1. what questions does this raise? 2. what are the challenges and opportunities? 3. what would be useful to explore more?
