Welcome to the January Drawing Club!

This is a free online drawing club for anyone looking to start a regular drawing practice and to use drawing as exercise towards self discovery. No experience of drawing is required and you don’t have to sign up.

There will be a drawing prompt every day in January and each drawing could take between 2 and 30 minutes. I will post the prompts here on this page so bookmark this page for easy reference. I will also share the prompts on my instagram stories. Please feel free to post your drawings on instagram using the hashtag #januarydrawingclub.

Drawings do not need to be at all ‘good’ or finished or perfect or any of that nonsense. These are experiments, attempts and probably some will be frankly a bit rubbish. That’s OK, it’s how we learn. Be brave about what you post, as your efforts encourage others to be brave too. We are looking to become more observant about ourselves and our surroundings. Through drawing, I for one hope to find out a little more about my marks and my visual vocabulary, why I choose the marks, tones, shapes and subjects I do and how these can help inform my wider artistic practice. The point is not to end up with a series of perfect ‘apples in a bowl’ drawings!

Materials - I would recommend a plain pencil and any paper you have, no need to buy anything special. The back of an envelope would do. If you want to explore charcoal, inks or anything else then go for it!

We will draw from imagination or things and people in and around our homes to keep the prompts biographical and personal to ourselves. These are just ideas of course, you can do anything you want!
